WHAT SMELLS REPEL SKUNKS?

When you want to keep skunks away from your home, one good way to keep them at bay is to have smells around your home that they hate. Having these smells around your home will keep skunks away as well as other animals that may potentially infest your home.

Commercial repellents
Many commercial repellents contain liquid or granular repellents that usually have urine from predators as an active ingredient. Having this as an ingredient will allow the skunk to think that there are other predators in the area, making them fearful and run away immediately. These repellents, however, are only a short-term solution, this is because animals have a tendency to get used to smells, and as such eventually ignore the scent once they become extremely hungry. It is also important to note that you need to place your odor repellent a distance away from any doors or windows you have, this is so the bad smell doesn’t drift around inside your home spreading the smell.

Soap & deodorizers
Skunks also hate the smell of bars of soap and of deodorizers, as such if you feel the need to not use urine or commercial repellents in your home, simply washing the area around your home with soap and deodorant will also do the trick.

Essential oils
Essential oils are also another natural repellent that can be used to keep skunks at bay, as well as letting your area smell great. All you have to do is spray oils such as eucalyptus, cinnamon, lemon, etc. around your home, specifically in areas with high activity. Keep the oils away from trees or plants that bear fruit, however, because this may lead to it having an odd taste.

Ammonia
Ammonia is also a smell that keeps skunks away. How you can apply ammonia to prevent skunks is cut a hole on the top of a can/jar. Then pouring a minuscule amount of ammonia inside. Put a rag in the jar and let it soak for a while, then pull one end of the rag up the hole you created until it completely blocks the hole. The rag will then absorb the ammonia and create a stick of scents that will spread the scent throughout the air. It is important to have gloves on during this process as ammonia is a toxic substance. It is also wise to avoid this form of repellent if you have pets around the house.

Coffee grounds
Coffee grounds are something that we humans love, but skunks hate with a burning passion. With that in mind, scattering coffee grounds around your home would be a great way to keep the rascals out. Coffee grounds are also helpful in such a way that they won’t make your home smell bad but also keep the pests away. The coffee grounds also serve as a good compost for plants, making them thrice as helpful.

Mothballs
Mothballs are another way you can prevent skunks from entering your home. Mothballs, however, is the least recommended method of getting rid of skunks, this is because mothballs are highly toxic, and can not only bring harm to other living things in your area but to you as well. The mothballs should be placed in the areas in which you believe the skunks are staying in. The scent it releases is extremely toxic and will definitely drive the skunks away, but again, it is very toxic to humans, plants, and soil. Please exercise caution when using the mothball method.
